The Math I Did This Summer

Mary Ambrosino and Calvin Woo will give talks on their summer REU experiences on Wednesday, September 21,  from 12:00-1:00 in SCP 229. There will be a short break between the speakers at approximately 12:30 and refreshements will be served.

Mary will give a talk on:
Title: Classifying Bases of Rectangles in R^3 by Weak-Type Estimates
Abstract: In this talk, properties of differentiation bases and their corresponding weak type estimates will be introduced. Three attempted proofs of a weak type estimate for a basis of rectangles with a specific property will be discussed.

Calvin Woo will step in as a second speaker, after lots of cancellation issues.
This is not 100% certain yet since he had an awfully short notice, he will talk on his REU research at DIMACS,from 2010 Summer.

Title:Understanding Diffusion Maps
Abstract:Let $X=\{x_1, x_2, …, x_N\}$ be a discrete data set such that $X\subset\mathbb{R}^k$. Our goal is to describe the intrinsic geometry of his high-dimensional data set. However, our dimension $k$ may be of a very high order, such that $X$ appears relatively sparse in this high-dimensional space. It can be realized that this data set actually lies intrinsically in a lower-dimensional space, and so we aspire to determine what that space is, and what geometry can we discern in this space.
