How to Prepare for Connections

Plan:
·        After you register for the connections event, refer to the attendee list. Who are the employers, alumni, and follow students attending the event and who do you want to talk to? Utilize this time to talk with all attendees.
·        Manage your time so you can speak to all the employers you plan to meet. You may want to begin your networking by first meeting with an employer who is not your top interest so to become more comfortable with the networking format, then talk to the employer you are most interested in. This way you have gained more confidence and familiarity with the process.

Prepare:
·        Update your resume.
·        Update your social media accounts. Are the images and messaging portraying your best self?
·        Draft your elevator pitch to introduce yourself.
·        Research companies and representatives. Beyond company websites, use social media and YouTube to gain organization information. Follow them and keep up to date about your industry.
·        Ensure your video and audio connections are working to avoid any technical difficulties while attending the event.
·        What is happening in current events or within your student organizations that are industry specific and will support conversation?
·        Choose your professional outfit. You will have your camera on, so dress for success!
·        Decide the best placement of your camera; it should be proportional of your upper-body and head.
·        Be aware of the lighting in the room, avoid a washed out image.

Action:
·        Non-verbal communication such as good eye contact, smiling, and nodding your head are helpful to show you are listening.
·        Be sure to have your camera on at all times.
·        Turn off any distractions – cell phone, email, television, video games. Close other website tabs or open programs.
·        Do not eat during the Connections event but a drink of water is recommended.
·        Take notes during your conversations.
·        Be sure to offer your resume (to be emailed) or LinkedIn profile URL in the chat feature.
·        Collect the representative’s contact information – email and telephone number.
·        Say a quick thank you when you leave the conversation; move on to the next representative you plan to meet. Remember you need to manage your time, don’t get caught talking to one person.

Follow Up:
·        Follow up within the first 24 hours after the event with all representatives you met. This is a short message to let them know you appreciate their time speaking to you. You can share what you enjoyed learning about their organization, attach your resume, and indicate if you plan to apply for an internship or full time position.
·        Find them on LinkedIn and write a note to connect.
·        Create a spreadsheet or document that will organize the contact information of the representatives as well as compile conversation notes.
·        Apply to available positions on Handshake or the company’s website – if you are interested.
