Transferring Courses

TCNJ accepts courses from other schools as generic course credits.  However, you need special approval for it count as a specific course which you may need as a prerequisite or as a requirement for your major.  All classes at a 2-year NJ college have already been evaluated to see if they are equivalent to some TCNJ course.  You can go to the website            NJ Transfer to determine which courses have preapproval.  For your convenience, Here’s a table of the most commonly transferred courses available at an NJ 2-year college.  To use the table, go to the row of the college and the column of the particular TCNJ course and check the entry to see which course(s), if any, count as our course.

If you are going to take the course at an NJ 4-year college or at an out of state school, you need to get the approval from the department’s transfer coordinator.  Some courses at nearby colleges and universities have been preapproved.  The following table contains courses that have been approved in the past.

All transfers to be used as a prerequisite or corequisite must be submitted at least two weeks before the start of the semester.  The process of getting approval depends on whether or not your course has already been transferred to TCNJ or it’s a course you are planning on taking in the future.

If You Have Already Taken the Course Before Enrolling at TCNJ

First make sure the course has successfully transferred to TCNJ.  If not, contact Records and Registration.  You will then need to email the Math and Stat department’s Transfer Coordinator at mathtransfer@tcnj.edu. You will need to send the coordinator:

  1. a) The school and course number of the course you’ve taken.
  2. b) Your student ID number.
  3. c) The course’s detailed syllabus – or − Indicate that it’s on one of the preapproved lists above.

If you send a syllabus, it must contain a detailed list of topics in the course, preferably a week by week schedule.   Once sent in, the coordinator will evaluate the course and determine if it qualifies.  You will be notified of the decision by email.  This process may take around two weeks or more to complete.

If You Plan to Take the Course in the Future

There is no guarantee that any given course will qualify as a particular TCNJ course.  You must complete this process before you take the course to ensure you’re not wasting time and money.  You also need to realize that TCNJ does not accept letter grades from other schools.  Taking a course at another institution will only give you credit for that course.  This means if you have taken a course at TCNJ and are retaking it to improve your grade, you must retake it at TCNJ.  You must get a C or higher for the credit to transfer.

To apply for approval, you need to email the Math and Stat department’s Transfer Coordinator at mathtransfer@tcnj.edu. You will need to send the coordinator:

  1. a) A completed Course Authorization Form.
  2. b) The course’s detailed syllabus − or − Indicate that it’s on one of the preapproved lists above.

Fill out the course authorization form on line, download it as a pdf and attach it in your email to the transfer coordinator.  If you send a syllabus, it must contain a detailed list of topics in the course, preferably a week by week schedule.   Once sent in, the coordinator will evaluate the course and determine if it qualifies.  You will be notified of the decision by email.  This process can take around two weeks to complete.
