TCNJ accepts courses from other schools as generic course credits. However, you must get special approval for it to count as a specific course which you may need as a prerequisite or as a requirement for your major. For courses to transfer to the math department, you must earn a C or better and they must have in person exams. Purely online courses cannot count as TCNJ math department offerings. All transfers to be used as a prerequisite or corequisite must be submitted at least two weeks before the start of the semester. The process of getting approval depends on whether or not the course is at a New Jersey 2-year college. It also depends on whether the course transferred to TCNJ, when you enrolled, or if you plan on taking the course while at the college. Go to the appropriate instructions below to determine what you need to do to transfer your courses.
If You Took the Course at an NJ 2-Year College Before Enrolling at TCNJ
All classes at a 2-year NJ college have already been evaluated to see if they are equivalent to some TCNJ course. You can go to the website NJ Transfer to determine which courses have preapproval. For your convenience, Here’s a table of the most commonly transferred courses available at an NJ 2-year college. To use the table, go to the row of the college and the column of the particular TCNJ course and check the entry to see which course(s), if any, count as our course. These should automatically be transferred as their TCNJ equivalent. Contact Records and Registration if they are not.
If You Want to Take a Course at an NJ 2-Year College After Enrolling at TCNJ
You must complete this process before you take the course to ensure you’re not wasting time and money. You also need to realize that TCNJ does not accept letter grades from other schools. Taking a course at another institution will only give you credit for that course. This means if you have taken a course at TCNJ and are retaking it to improve your grade, you must retake it at TCNJ.
To apply for approval, you need to email the Math and Stat department’s Transfer Coordinator at mathtransfer@tcnj.edu. You will need to send the coordinator:
- a) A completed Course Authorization Form.
- b) An indication that it’s on the preapproved list above or has been approved on NJ Transfer. Send a screen shot if it’s on NJ Transfer.
Fill out the course authorization form online, download it as a pdf and attach it in your email to the transfer coordinator. Make sure to request your community college transcript be sent to TCNJ Records and Registration once you have successfully completed the course.
If You Took a Course at an NJ 4-Year College OR an Out-of-State School Before Enrolling at TCNJ
If you have taken the course at an NJ 4-year college or at an out of state school, you need to get the approval from the department’s transfer coordinator. Many courses at nearby colleges and universities have been preapproved. The following table contains common courses that have been approved in the past.
The next table contains a list of upper level courses that have been approved.
If the course you’ve taken is on this list, it will automatically be approved although you still need to contact the department transfer coordinator.
First, make sure the course has successfully transferred to TCNJ. If not, contact Records and Registration. You will then need to email the Math and Stat department’s Transfer Coordinator at mathtransfer@tcnj.edu. You will need to send the coordinator:
- a) The school and course number of the course you’ve taken.
- b) Your student ID number.
- c) The course’s detailed syllabus – or − Indicate that it’s on one of the preapproved lists above.
If you send a syllabus, it must contain a detailed list of topics in the course, preferably a week by week schedule. A short one paragraph description will not be accepted. Once sent in, the coordinator will evaluate the course and determine if it qualifies. You will be notified of the decision by email. This process may take around two weeks or more to complete.
