The state of New Jersey offers an endorsement in Middle School with Subject Matter Specialization in Mathematics for grades 5–8 for teacher candidates who have 15 credits in mathematics and a passing score on the Middle School Mathematics Praxis II exam. All teacher candidates for the K-6 certificate take MAT 105. This certificate would satisfy the remaining credits and help to prepare you to take the Middle School Mathematics Praxis II exam.
Choose any three of the following courses:
- MAT 211 Number Theory and Systems for Middle School Teachers
- MAT 212 Data Analysis and Probability for Middle School Teachers
- MAT 214 Patterns, Functions, and Algebra for Middle School Teachers
- MAT 215 Geometry for Middle School Teachers
- MAT 217 Discrete Math for Middle School Teachers
- MAT 218 Concepts of Calculus for Middle School Teachers
Note: Mathematics Secondary Education majors may substitute MTT 380, Methods of Teaching Mathematics I, for one of the MAT 21X courses.
Apply
To apply for the certificate in Middle School Mathematics, students must be education majors in good standing, earn a grade of C- or higher in all three courses, and earn a grade of C or higher in at least one of the courses. Students need to fill out the minor, course of study, or certificate form and email it to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at mathstat@tcnj.edu. Once the form is signed and returned, it needs to be submitted to the Office of Records & Registration for processing.
