Math Club Speaker John Saccoman to Speak on “The Axioms of Sabermetrics”

John Saccoman, the chair of the Math & CS Department at Seton Hall University, will be speaking on “The Axioms of Sabermetrics,” on Thursday, October 6, 2011. The talk will be held from 5:30-6:30 PM in SCP 101.

Sabermetrics is the term coined by its guru Bill James to mean “The search for objective truth about baseball.” It is an acronym using SABR (Society for American Baseball Research). In mathematics, we define axioms to be those statements which we accept without proof. In the 1985 edition of his annual Baseball Abstract, James described the Axioms of Sabermetrics, and these principles guide Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Beane, among others. In this talk, we present these axioms in the context of Beane’s Athletics from the 2003 season.
