The applied mathematics specialization of the mathematics major enables students to concentrate their studies in applied mathematics. The Undergraduate Bulletin contains the official list of major requirements. However, students will meet all their requirements by completing the major requirements listed below and in the checklist, meeting the department’s retention and GPA requirements, and completing TCNJ’s College Core requirements. Below are additional program documents and other information about the specialization. For more information, please contact your advisor or the department chair.
Applied Mathematics Correlates (3 units)
Students must complete one course with lab:
- BIO 201: Foundations of Biological Inquiry
- CHE 201: General Chemistry I
- CHE 202: General Chemistry II
- PHY 201: General Physics I
- PHY 202: General Physics II
- PHY 220: Advanced Geology
- PHY 411: Electromagnetic Waves and Optics
Complete both course:
- CSC 220: CS I: Computer Problem Solving
- CSC 230: CS II: Data Structures
Applied Mathematics Foundational Courses (8.5 units)
- MAT 099: Orientation to Mathematics and Statistics
- MAT 128: Calculus B
- MAT 200: Proof Writing Through Discrete Mathematics
- MAT 205: Linear Algebra: Theory and Applications
- MAT 229: Multivariable Calculus
- STA 215: Statistical Inference
- MAT 275: Sophomore Seminar
- MAT 310: Real Analysis
- MAT 326: Differential Equations
- MAT 498: Capstone
Applied Mathematics Options (6 units)
Complete two courses:
- Applied Mathematics 300/400 Level Option
Complete one course:
- Applied Mathematics 400 Level Option
Complete three courses:
- Mathematics or Statistics or Science 300 or 400 level option
Students complete an additional 6 course units by taking courses of their choosing. Three of these must be chosen from among the approved applied mathematics options list (see checklist below), to include at least one course numbered between MAT400 and MAT480. Two of the remaining three courses are to be chosen from among all MAT and STA courses numbered 300 or above. The sixth course may be an additional MAT course numbered 300 or above or may be a course from the following list:
BIO 471/CSC 471, CHE 372, CSC 335, CSC 445, FIN 360, PHY 401
Students may count at most one course unit of independent study, guided study, or independent research (MAT/STA 39x/49x) as one of the six course units.
